Dr. Michael W. Redding is the Vice Chancellor for Public and Government Affairs, a position he has held since May 2013. In this capacity, Dr. Redding has leadership responsibility for establishing strong relationships with outside constituencies and building broad understanding of the many ways in which UIC contributes to society. Units within Public and Government Affairs are responsible for community relations, communications and marketing, web design and development and institutional advocacy.
Redding has a distinguished record of achievement in higher education, public service and the private sector. As vice president of university relations at the University of Oregon, he managed a comprehensive external affairs division encompassing communications, marketing, media relations, design and editing services, digital and social media communications, state and federal relations, community engagement, trademark licensing, alumni affairs and development communications, the university's radio station and the University of Oregon Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.
Redding served in various senior leadership roles at the University of Oregon over 13 years, including Vice President of University Advancement and Associate Vice President of Public and Government Affairs. Redding was a member of the president's senior leadership team from 2004-2013 and helped lead the university's overall strategic direction, implemented an integrated marketing and strategic communications plan, and secured significant state and federal investment in the education enterprise.
Before joining the University of Oregon, Redding was legislative director in the Office of Intergovernmental Relations for Oregon’s second largest city as well as U.S. public and government affairs representative for Texaco. He has held numerous volunteer leadership positions in professional and civic organizations, including service on the board of Oregon Special Olympics, Lane County Economic Committee and the Oregon Affordable Housing Coalition. Dr. Redding earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware and received his Masters and Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
